100% Tobacco FreeMy name is Amanda Sena. I am a junior at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School in Albuquerque, NM. This is my second year in Evolvement and my first year on the Leadership Team. Being a part of Evolvement let me to stand up for tobacco-free schools. It is important that schools go tobacco-free because students spend most of their day at school and if all schools are tobacco-free then students won’t be able to smoke for most of the day.
Also seeing students smoke makes me feel bad for them because I know in the future they will be suffering from health problems. For example, my grandpa started smoking at a young age and now has a really tough time breathing and it’s hard to think that any of my classmates could end up like that in the future.
A tobacco-free policy at a school won’t just minimize teen tobacco users in the school, but in the whole community. This is because teens do what they see others do, so if they don’t see others smoke at school then they might not smoke on the free time that they have. The 24/7 campaign is trying to make schools 100% tobacco-free, which will make every school in the entire district 100% tobacco free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
